Common Pediatric Conditions and Treatment Options

If your child is suffering from a sinus infection or nasal congestion, they are not alone. Sinus health issues are common in America as nearly 31 million people have already been diagnosed with sinusitis. With 12% of adults receiving this diagnosis, it’s only natural to be concerned that your child may already have sinusitis or a similar sinus health issue.

While most children get colds throughout their childhood, these colds can be intensified by sinusitis, which is a common issue. According to a cohort study, between 5-10% of infections in the upper respiratory tract of children are complicated by sinusitis.

Is your child suffering from a sinus health issue? To learn what is going on inside their body, the cause, and to find the right solution to put an end to their suffering, consult with the pediatric sinus experts at Ear, Nose, & Throat Clinic of Coffee County by scheduling an appointment today.

You know from personal experience the impact that a cold or sinus infection can have on your life in a negative way. From needing to take a day off of work to feeling agitated and irritated from congestion, your symptoms take a toll on your mood and your health. This prevents you from living each day to its fullest.

Help your child overcome their symptoms and return to being able to enjoy the simple things, from a walk outside to playing with friends after school.

Do you know what is affecting your child’s sinus health? Let’s explore the two most common sinus issues that your child may be dealing with -- pediatric sinusitis and adenoiditis.

Pediatric Sinusitis

Sinusitis, also known as a sinus infection or rhinosinusitis, occurs when the tissue that lines the sinuses becomes inflamed or swollen. This prevents mucus from draining properly, resulting in a buildup of germs, and an infection. This infection can cause short-term and long-term health issues.

There are several forms of sinusitis that your child may be dealing with, including acute sinusitis (sinus infection lasting less than 12 weeks), chronic sinusitis (sinus infection lasting longer than 12 weeks), and recurrent sinusitis (3+ sinus infections in a single year).

Finding a long-term solution to the health issue causing your child’s sinusitis is vital to preventing further issues and helping them experience relief.

Signs of Sinusitis in Your Child

If your son or daughter has sinusitis, they may have one or several of the following symptoms:
  • Nasal congestion
  • Headaches
  • Cough
  • Irritability
  • Pressure in their sinuses (cheeks and forehead)
  • Fever
  • Yellow or green snot
  • Sore throat from drainage
  • Loss of taste or smell
Sinusitis can be diagnosed by your Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctor. Since the sinuses may not be fully formed in your child, it can be difficult to detect and treat. To give them the best possible care, choose an ENT with expertise treating sinusitis in children.

Pediatric Adenoiditis

Adenoiditis occurs when the adenoids, located in the throat near the back of the nose, are inflamed. This inflammation is caused by an infection. This issue mostly affects children and can cause your child’s breathing to become complicated. It can lead to an infection in the respiratory system, which can be avoided by addressing the issue immediately with an ENT.

Symptoms of Adenoiditis in Your Child

If your child is suffering from adenoiditis, they may have one or several of the following symptoms:
  • Nasal congestion
  • Pain in the throat
  • Neck swelling in the glands
  • Snoring
  • Pain in the ears
  • Trouble breathing from the nose
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Sleep Apnea
Adenoiditis can be diagnosed by your Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) doctor. If your child is exhibiting symptoms of having adenoiditis, contact your ENT immediately.

Address Your Child's Sinusitis and Adenoiditis Issues

Treatments available to provide relief to your child from sinusitis and adenoiditis can vary. If dealing with an acute case of sinusitis, medication may be prescribed to get them past a single sinus infection. For long-term relief from chronic or recurrent sinusitis, a minimally invasive procedure may be the best course of action.

ENT specialty specializes in providing safe, effective treatments for children suffering from sinus issues that will have them back on their feet and playing outside in no time.

Common Treatments Include:

Adenoidectomy
An adenoidectomy is a procedure to remove the adenoids, which will resolve the infections your child is suffering from as a result of adenoiditis. By taking action, respiratory infections resulting from adenoiditis can also be avoided.

Balloon Sinuplasty
Balloon Sinuplasty is a minimally-invasive procedure that involves placing a small balloon in your child’s blocked sinus, inflating the balloon, and removing it.

In this in-office procedure, your child’s blocked sinus pathways will be cleared, allowing their body to restore its ability to drain the sinuses and prevent the buildup of bacteria, which leads to infection.

When an adenoidectomy is combined with balloon sinuplasty, there is an 80% long-term success rate of clearing a child’s sinus-related issues.

Turbinate Reduction
When the turbinates enlarge, they can obstruct the nasal airways. This is called turbinate hypertrophy. Turbinate reduction is an outpatient procedure that utilizes an endoscope to reduce the size of turbinates inside the nose.

This procedure clears the airways to restore drainage and prevent chronic and recurrent sinusitis caused by enlarged turbinates. These procedures are guided with CT imaging at Ear, Nose, & Throat Clinic of Coffee County to ensure accuracy and minimize complications.
